It Ended with Grey’s Anatomy - episode 55

You are in for a treat.  Honestly I would say anytime you listen to an episode you are in for a gift because every person, every female has a story to tell, to share, that will benefit us all in some way.  Big and small.  That is what we are tapping into.  Being transparent, choosing to be vulnerable, living authentically.  These are the pillars this show is built on.  Our guests, Kristi and daughter Indya embody these traits and it is a joy to have them on the show.

Ok, I do say I love it often.  I can’t help myself because I do.  I will work on some more variety for your sake.  I want to say I will cherish this episode as a mark in time for Indya especially.  As I mentioned she is our youngest guest ever and I think this will be a great touchstone for her to come back to.  Same for her mom.  It’s a distinctive point in time.  Let’s look for these, and cherish them.  Like a snapshot that captures a moment.  Treasure.  Yes, treasure.

While we had our usual conversation involving questions, answers, and chatting, we ended up riffing on Grey’s Anatomy which was unexpected and a lot of fun. Favorite characters? Who do we miss? And how can a show still be good after 17 seasons? Mind-boggling.

Funny. Caring. Honest. (Indya, about mom Kristi.)Loving. Independent. Relentless (Kristi, about daughter Indya.)

Thoughts from It Ended with Grey’s Anatomy

Why write about Shonda Rhimes?  Well, for starters she is the creator of the show we ended our conversation with, Grey’s Anatomy.  She is the creator, head writer and executive producer.  As we mentioned it is in its 17th season and going as strong as ever. How many shows can you say that about? It is diverse, compelling, with ever-evolving characters, and unpredictable plot lines. She is a master of storytelling. And she has broken barriers by being who she is: a woman of color, creating jobs, and casting across the color spectrum. She is currently the highest paid show runner. That says something. Lots of something.

Some things to note:

While she has had success with shows like Grey’s, Private Practice, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder, she had three shows that were not picked up, and two that were not renewed early on. To me this is one of the things about her to be admired.  Her tenacity, her relentlessness to keep creating, to keep going regardless of the results.

Rhimes now has a production deal with Netflix which brought Bridgerton to the masses. "The reason I came to Netflix is because I wanted to be able to make television without anybody bothering me," she says. "And as long as I get to keep making television without anybody bothering me, I'm happy."

And then there was the year of saying yes. She decided to face her fears and wrote a book about the experiment, Year of Yes: Dancing it Out, Stand in the Sun and Be Your Own Person. So she said yes. Yes to the things that took her out of her comfort zone, yes to the things she would normally say no to. Most notably she said yes to playing with her daughters when they asked. It wasn’t something she felt she was good at, and she soon learned being in the moment with them brought joy that actually ultimately helped her work be even better.

Shonda quotes to Make You Go Hmm-Yeah:

  • Have some fire. Be unstoppable. Be a force of nature. Be better than anyone here. And don’t give a damn what anyone thinks.

  • You can waste your lives drawing lines or you can live your life crossing them.

  • Ditch the dream and be a doer.

  • The only limit to success is your own imagination.

  • I don’t know why people don’t feel like being positive is much more powerful than being negative.

  • Saying yes is courage. Saying yes is the sun. Saying yes is life.

Thank you Shonda for all the great stories and inspiring us to say yes.
