Know Thyself, and He Does - episode 116
Bruce Rosenberg is today’s Le Voyage en France guest. We met him, and his wife Anne, when they invited us to lunch on the very first day in Lyon as we were all enjoying the town before we embarked on the ship. It was a lovely outing and we all became fast friends. Bruce and I share a deep love of movies and TV shows. I appreciate how Bruce looks at things and also the depth of his character. Is it any wonder I would invite him onto the show?
It was a delight having this conversation with Bruce. I learned more about how he looks at the stories told in movies and TV that can become life lessons, how he admires both Kennedy and Einstein, and the importance of really knowing yourself. And yes, you can reinvent yourself at any time. He’s my kind of guy.
Snapshots on the Rhone
Thoughts from Know Thyself, and He Does
As I mentioned, we met Anne and Bruce that first day in Lyon. From there we had many good conversations with them around the breakfast, lunch and dinner table about the day’s highlights, movies, our kids, anything that came up. Since we signed up for excursions before we got on the cruise, we met many other people too as we toured around in small groups. You tend to get to know a small group pretty well, some you have quick small talk with, and others you get on the “hi” program with as they become familiar to you. There were a few we remember well: Bobby-no-knees (Ron and I both loved saying his name), John and Char, Charlie and Lisa, Mary Anne, and others whose names no longer come easily to mind one month later.
So onto some snapshots on the Rhone:
Oingt - pronounced (“whah” - like a baby’s cry) is a small town just outside Lyon in the Beaujolais wine region with a quaint village of twisting, turning streets. “Mascot” a dog who works on a local winery. We had as many questions about the dog as we did about the wine! Delicious wine by the way.
Lyon - the second largest city in France, known as the capital of gastronomy. Famous for its historical and architectural landmarks. Love this door! We hiked from the castle on the left down to the ship. Alex, the tour guide with the red “lollipop” was amusing and very knowledgeable.
Vienne - surrounded by steep hills, with the remnants of Roman and medieval influences seen throughout. The panoramic view was incredible and we couldn’t resist taking a picture of the local lizard for our granddaughter who loves them. A beautiful church and cemetery.
Tournon - more beautiful vistas and we hiked to a castle to partake in a wine and chocolate pairing. The tour guide was knowledgable about wines and we met up with the chocolatier who made a special run of chocolates to go specifically with each of the three wines we tasted. Tres bon!
Arles and Les Baux de Provence - Since my favorite artist is Vincent Van Gogh I was excited to take a walking tour of Arles. A picture of the painting he painted of the garden in the actual garden he painted. I know it sounds like Dr. Seuss. The last shot is of the art show Carrieres des Lumieres which projects images of art and photography in Les Baux de Provence. Spectacular!
And that concludes some snapshots on the Rhone. May you be able to travel to where you heart desires, and soak in the culture, meet the people, and experience other places. I believe it will be well worth your time.
