Be Your Authentic Self - episode 79

This is the Mahalo Maui series (mahalo means thank you).  I wanted to invite a few people I connected with while there.  Yes we were on vacation fo two weeks which we’ve never done before, and we feel blessed for having had the opportunity.  One night we were out and the bartender Sy, shout out to him at Lehue Lounge, told us to come back the next night because there would be live music with Carlos Santana’s nephew, Brian.  On his advice we did, and we were not disappointed.   Oh, and that voice!  Fast forward: Brian said yes to being on the show.  Listen to all the wisdom this 28-year old has…

As I record this I am still swimming in the positivity and insight Brian has.  And did I mention he sparkles when he smiles?  He understands what it takes to keep creating, to do the work and to learn all of the aspects to be the successful musician/songwriter/producer he will be.  And I say will because I have no doubt it will happen.  It is happening.

Ted Lasso

Thoughts from Be Your Authentic Self

What is your authentic self? What is my authentic self? In looking up the definition of authentic (remember word-nerd) it means of undisputed origin; genuine, I can think of no one currently who fits this description better than the fictional Ted Lasso. I asked Brian Santana if he’d seen the show and he hadn’t. I realize not everyone has. What I will say is if you’ve seen it you know what I’m talking about. Sure there are plenty of shows out there that have all kinds of interesting characters. The thing is for the times we are in, as in pandemic, polarizing, politically-charged, there is little we need more than the quirky, positive, unapologetic show.

Don’t you want to be a little more like Ted? I know I do. He doesn’t take no for answer and continues to believe in you when you might not even believe in yourself. His positive outlook is simply refreshing. (Sure he has panic attacks and for me, that makes him that much more like one of us.) And the way he shares his unconventional quips to uplift and encourage those around him is nothing short of inspirational. More of this please.

May favorite Ted-isms (stuff Ted said), season one:

  • Taking on a challenge is a lot like riding a horse, isn’t it? If you’re comfortable while you’re doing it, you’re probably doing it wrong.

  • If that’s a joke, I love it. If not, can’t wait to unpack that with you later.

  • Your body is like day-old rice. If it ain’t warmed up properly, something real bad could happen.

  • Ice cream is the best. It’s kinda like seeing Billy Joel perform live. Never disappoints.
