Confidence: A Belief it’s Going to Work - episode 188

His grandfather left an indelible imprint on his life.  He showed him, “Love is what love does” and “If love doesn’t do anything then love ain’t nothing” and more, all through example.  I picture a humble, hard-working, confident man.  I think I’m right.  This week’s guest, Mike Pittman, shared this tender story of working with his grandfather as a teenager, and how it helped form him into who he became.

My three words for Mike?  Creative. Curious. Confident.

Mike defined confidence as “that thing that convinces you, you can do something.”  (Simple and profound.)  And the three suggestions to become more confident?

  1. Suspend the belief that what you want is not possible to have

  2. Surround yourself with people better than you, at least one person you can learn from

  3. Be willing to be taught; don’t limit yourself or miss out on knowledge

Passionate. Emotional. Strong.

A Real High and a Real Low

Thoughts from Confidence: A Belief it’s Going to Work

Do you ever feel “high” after you accomplish something you’re passionate about? I feel elated after every conversation I have with each guest that comes on the podcast. I can’t fully articulate why, I just know that I do. It may have something to do with the one-on-one connection, seeing and being seen by another, talking about things of value, or all of the above. Plus playful moments are fun too! I truly hope you have found the thing (or things) you love and are doing them because we need you to. We miss out if you don’t and so do you. So this is a thank you to every guest who has been on UY. I am grateful you shared who you are with us and that you are out there doing the thing that only you can do.

You may recall in last week’s blog, Shaun had to make that horrible decision about putting down his beloved dog, Freddy. If you missed it, go back an episode page and there it will be. It was just as difficult as you’d imagine. Lots of tears. But once again, isn’t that a demonstration of the love we had for him, the love he gave back? Yes, I believe it is. The vet that came to the house for the dreaded deed invited Shaun to write a memorial, which he did. I’ve asked for permission to share it here. It’s no small thing loving someone and I know from experience things like writing, talking, remembering, help you grieve. Enjoy.

Freddy’s Poem

Your origins are a mystery

Found in a field in the hills of Santee.

I wasn't sure, but my friend insisted we take a gander

I had no idea the world conspired for things so much grander.

A companion. Both friend and family

You unapologetically you. I unabashedly me.

Yet we learned to let down walls, coalescing as a whole

If there is a meaning to life, then surely that's the goal.

Sure I provided love, safety, care and treats galore

But you managed to give those, and oh so much more.

You gifted me wisdom that books and mentors could not offer

What it is to be present, forgiving, and many more things to ponder.

I miss you dear friend, I keep a piece of you in my heart

So someday when I see you, I can return it

Let this not be the end, but only the start.

Rest In Peace, Freddy
